Florida Trend names MDC's Dr. Eduardo PadrĂ³n, Floridian of the Year

When newly appointed U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan made his first official visit to a higher-educational institution last spring, he said it was no coincidence that he chose Miami Dade College. Duncan said he wanted to underscore the point that "community colleges will play a big role in getting America back on its feet again, and they will no longer be undervalued and underutilized." Nova Southeastern University's Ray Ferrero Jr., Newsmaker of 2009

Ray Ferrero Jr. is chancellor and CEO of 28,600-student Nova Southeastern University in Davie, the state's largest non-profit private university and Broward's second-largest private employer with 4,000 workers. He chaired the Broward Alliance economic development group in 2009.

During their annual summit in October, the University Economic Development Association honored the University of Florida with the Award of Excellence in Technology Commercialization. UNF Student Honored for Service at Summer Commencement

Southside resident Kristen Ballentine, who will graduate with a bachelor's degree in Psychology and a 3.67 GPA, will be recognized as the recipient of the Senior Service Award during the 11 a.m. ceremony. The UNF Alumni Association presents the Senior Service Award to a graduating senior for outstanding volunteer service to the University or community. View Article »

"Bonner Love" Rules At National Conference At Stetson University

A lot of young people want to change the world. The ones gathered at Stetson University this week are actually doing so. More than 350 Bonner students, leaders and administrators from throughout the United States are participating in the Corella and Bertram F. Bonner Foundation's 2009 Summer Leadership Institute, June 3 to 6 at Stetson, the only Bonner school in Florida. The Bonner program guides young people in making the world a better place through service, leadership and collaboration with community partners to achieve policy changes. View Article »

334 MDC Students, Staff to Receive U.S. Presidential Volunteer Service Awards on June 16th

Civic engagement is a cornerstone at Miami Dade College (MDC) with more than 5,000 students participating in academic service-learning projects each year, and thousands more who serve the community through their involvement in student clubs and organizations. Several hundred of these students – approximately 342 from all eight MDC campuses and a 30-year veteran college administrator – will receive the prestigious U.S. President's Volunteer Service Awards (PVSA) during a special ceremony hosted by College President Dr. Eduardo J. New Engaged Scholarship Toolkit Available from Campus Compact

A new online Engaged Scholarship Toolkit is now accessible on Campus Compact's website. The toolkit offers an annotated guide to the best information available on engaged scholarship, as well as models, exemplars, and original essays. Developed by The Research University Civic Engagement Network (TRUCEN), for which Campus Compact serves as coordinator, the toolkit is an essential resource for all higher education institutions seeking to implement or improve engaged scholarship. President Obama made remarks about and signed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act. The president was introduced by Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-MA). Following the bill signing, the president, First Lady Michelle Obama, and Former President Bill Clinton participated in a service activity in Washington, D.C.
