The FL|CC AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) Initiative supports VISTA members at Host Sites across Florida. VISTA
members are placed with colleges, universities, and community-based organizations to combat poverty through leveraging higher education resources to
build the capacity of local non-profit organizations and through recruiting and training college students to provide college access mentoring for
youth. FL|CC VISTA members are successfully building bridges between the classrooms and communities by connecting educators, students,
and community partners to improve education and address societal needs through campus-community partnerships, applied civic education, and engaged
citizenship.
AmeriCorps VISTA is a full-time AmeriCorps Program, with members serving full-time year long terms. While in service, members receive a modest
living allowance and are eligible for healthcare benefits, childcare assistance, student loan forbearance and deferment, and one year of
noncompetitive status for a federal government job. Following the completion of their service year, members are eligible for an Education Award or
a monetary stipend.
The FL|CC College Access AmeriCorps Program is open to college students who will serve as mentors to at-risk youth, with the goal of
helping their mentees gain skills and knowledge needed for their eventual college access and success. AmeriCorps members will provide mentoring,
one-on-one or in a small-group setting, to students in grades 6-12, in, before, during, and after school hours hosted by school districts and
community agencies.
College Access is a part-time AmeriCorps program, and students can choose to serve 300, 450, 675, or 900 hours. After the completion of service,
students will receive a pro-rated Education Award based on the number of hours selected. Students selecting the 900 hour option are also eligible
to receive a modest living stipend directly from FL|CC.
The FL|CC Students In Service AmeriCorps Program supports a broad range of service opportunities beyond mentoring. Collegiate students
who are serving in the areas of education, the environment, human services, public safety, and community development are eligible. Additionally,
student teaching hours spent at Title 1 institutions or student teachers teaching Special Education, ESL/Bilingual Education, or Math and Science
Education are eligible.
Students In Service is a part-time AmeriCorps program with students serving 300 hours within a calendar year. After the completion of service,
students will receive an Education Award of $1,132.00 from the Corporation for National Community Service.
